Gulaab Gang Film – Controversy

It’s unbelievable the makers of Gulaab Gang film continuously denying that Gulaab Gang film is not similar to Gulabi Gang organization and refuse to give them credit.  When it’s obvious there is a complete resemblance of pink saris, bamboo stick and even the name.Yes, changing the vowels in the film title can’t justify that there is no resemblance in name.

The director of the Bollywood movie, Soumik Sen, insisted that “Gulaab Gang” had nothing to do with the Gulabi Gang, either the real women’s group or the documentary.

“I draw my inspiration from another Bollywood flick, ‘Mirch Masala,’ ” he told India Ink. “My movie is about a rural woman, Rajjo, trying to fight her way into setting up a school in her village. It is about education and how women in rural India have to fight for it.”

Gulab Gang producer Anubhav Sinha denies that the story of Gulab Gang doesn’t represent the Original Gulabi Gang. While movie exhibits by wearing pink sarees which completely resemble to Gulab Gang. Anubhav Sinha also said the movie is totally imaginary. He also said “It’s a woman’s fight for women’s rights that ends up fighting another woman. The film is not inspired by Sampat Pal at all. The story is set in Madhya Pradesh. Soumik Sen, (director) came to me with the script and I liked it so went for it.”

I don’t know whether the makers of Gulaab Gang are ignorant or made a planned controversial strategy to promote the film.  I like to ignore the ignorant part. In bollywood any controversy is publicity. Ms. Sampat Pal's lawyer statement weights the controversial strategy.

However, Sampat’s lawyer told the press that they had sent the notice to the makers in June last year, followed by several more notices. But "they chose to reply only on February 4, saying that the film bears no resemblance to Sampat Pal Devi’s life".

Its undeniable fact the story is not completely based on Gulabi Gang organization and the activist. But the core competence in the film story is the Pink saree, bamboo stick, women leader from a village fighting for rural women rights which is a copy cat of Gulabi Gang.

The ironic fact is that the Gulaab gang makers absolutely getting away with the controversy by simply promising a disclaimer saying "the movie has nothing to do with Ms.Sampat Pal or her work" with accolades of publicity. I am not making any comments about the verdict or about Ms. Samapat Pal. We all abide the law and the jurisdiction. I wish Gulabi Gang organization receives the deserved credit and monetary benefits which obviously useful for the empowerment of rural women.
